Before we talk supplements let’s be certain we understand the word.. To supplement means (something that completes or enhances something else when added to it). So the supplement is in addition to adequate water intake and an appropriate whole food diet.
When you add these in to a whole food diet they will work for you that much better. They are not a replacement for poor eating habits. So remember to focus on the hydration and the whole foods first.
One of the I recommend for all my players is a general multi-vitamin. Now that multi should be of high quality, meaning it is made from whole foods, not synthetics. Whole food multi-vitamins are much more expensive than their synthetic counter parts. Synthetic vitamins are not properly absorbed by the body. And you get little, to no benefits from taking them.
Why do we need a whole food vitamin?
Simply because we don’t eat perfectly all the time and this will help to fill in any gaps in your diet from time to time. So you want to make sure you’re touching all the bases with your B vitamins, A, C, E. etc.. Research shows that it does help to prevent chronic disease. And with all the pollutants in the air, water, and mainstream food supply we need extra nutrients to help detoxify the body.
Second supplement I highly recommend is a high quality fish oil.
Omega 3’s are in every cell in your body and they help to control blood sugar, prevent diabetes, weight gain, it’s anti-inflammatory, helps with brain function. It also actually helps to shrink fat cells so if you have enough on-board it will help you get leaner. 1 – 2 capsules per 50lbs. of bodyweight. Double for back pain peeps.
Third supplement I recommend is Vitamin D
We have an epidemic of Vitamin D deficiency in most of the world. Vitamin D is actually a steroid and we need enough of it in the body. and as we get older our body doesn’t produce as much as we did when we were younger. 5,000 IU/day.. elite players, 10,000 IU/day.. 60-80 nano grams per ml.
Fourth supplement I recommend is ZMA
ZMA is a combination of Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin B-6 designed to maximize absorption and to promote recovery from exercise. Zinc plays a central role in the regulation of cellular growth and tissue repair, as well as the maintenance of a healthy immune system. Magnesium is essential for the maintenance of electrolyte balance, energy production and normal neuromuscular function. Because physical activity can increase the need for these two minerals, ZMA is the ideal supplement to aid in their replenishment.
Last supplement are anti-inflammatory herbs.
Research shows that 80% of our golfers are either in pain, they have some kind of injury or illness. And 20% of players are taking pain pills before or during the round. If we can minimize this we can make a big difference. When a person takes a pain pill they are only masking the symptom. The pain is there for a reason. To let you know there’s something wrong in the body. Ignoring it by shutting off the pain mechanism won’t make “it” go away.
The best analogy I can think of is the engine light coming on in your car, signifying the car is low in oil and about to over heat. If you ignore the pain you can due some real and permanent damage to your bodies soft tissues.
Natural anti-inflammatories: Curcumin, Turmeric,Tart cherry juice.
Brett’s Bottom Line:
The objective it not just to play golf but to play pain free golf. Using these nutrition strategies of hydration, nutrition and supplementation – in addition to training, recovery and self-care will give you the best chance to play pain free golf as long as you want to.
